Frequently Asked Questions
The eight questions every visitor asks, answered straight.
Quick answers (the full FAQ has more):
- Is it a religion? No — belief in a Supreme Being is required, theology is not offered, all faiths sit together.
- Is it secret? Private ceremonies, public existence. You are reading its documents now.
- How do I join? Ask a lodge under your country’s recognized Grand Lodge. Interview, proposal, ballot.
- What does it cost? Modest dues, charity by your means, time and memory work.
- Are there women Masons? Yes — long-established female and mixed orders work the same degrees.
- Do Masons favour each other unfairly? The obligations explicitly forbid it; duty to law and fellow citizens comes first.
- Why the aprons and rituals? Inherited symbols, working as moral theatre — see Step 4.
- What’s the Scottish Rite / Royal Arch / Templars? Optional further degree systems — profiles in the Encyclopedia.
